Hector joins the NYCGS team of amazing teachers from Costa Rica, he has been playing the guitar for over fifteen years, and has been teaching guitar for many years as well. He started learning electric guitar, specifically rock, and then went on to study classical guitar at the University of Costa Rica. From there he got the chance to become a member of the Guitar Orchestra of Costa Rica, with whom he toured the country, played as soloist, and performed in the International Guitar Festival, sharing the stage with renowned guitarists such as Juanjo Dominguez, and Jorge Cardozo. Hector has always loved the guitar, and over the years, this love grew to other areas of music as well. Upon moving to New York, he received his BA in music, with a concentration in composition at the City College of New York, and won an ASCAP composition award/scholarship.
Hector believes in great education. To nurture the love of music and the guitar means incredible patience and trust between the teacher and the students, as well as creating a fun and dynamic environment. He enjoys helping people discover their talents, and make the music they love a more vivid part of their lives. The music he loves is varied – from Prokofiev to The Beatles to Iron Maiden, and everything in between! Hector currently plays lead guitar in the NYC rock band The Blackfires. His band has headlined sold out shows at some of NYC’s staple venues such as Grammercy Theater and Irving Plaza, as well as other prestigious venues such as the Whisky a go go in Los Angeles, and Trocadero in Philly. They also played at this year’s Loudwire Music Festival in Colorado, alongside Weezer, Linkin Park, and Rob Zombie. In addition they have played shows as direct support for renowned artists such as such as Europe, Skid Row, and even flew to Moscow, Russia, to perform at the Olympic Arena as direct support for the legendary AEROSMITH during their ‘Let Rock Rule’ world tour. They are currently busy writing new material for their full length album that will follow their debut EP.
