If you’re playing in the key of A major, there is an excellent chance that you’re going to run into an F#m. The key of A is very common so if you’re a beginner looking at chord charts on the internet, there’s a good chance that you’ve already been shut down by this difficult barre chord. Don’t worry. Eventually, you’ll be able to play all of the barre chords with the greatest of ease but for now, here is a handy alternative. The F#m7b6 (don’t worry about the complicated name) might just be called an A/F# but I think F#m7b6 is more accurate for our purposes (it really doesn’t matter what you call it). It can be found in the epic ballad Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead and it’s one of my favorite chords. Try it as a substitute for the difficult F#m chord whenever you need to!
