Class FAQs
Q: What if i don't know what I want to play?
A: That's ok! It is great to be open-minded with your song choice, however, it is important to bring two songs to the 1st day of rehearsal to be voted onto the setlist
Q: What if my musical taste is completely different from my band members?
A: We can typically agree on a setlist that pleases everyone. Keep in mind that you'll be given priority of choice through bringing your two selections to the group.
Q: What if I want to play an original song?
A: That's awesome! Original songs are welcome as long as they are finished. Bring a recording (any quality), lyrics and chords to show it to your bandmates and vote it onto the setlist.
Q: What if my skill level is below my band members?
A: if you are a committed musician, your skill level is now better than it was last year, last month, or last week. When playing in a group, you have the amazing opportunity to develop your skills; this is the true value of playing in a group. With that in mind, you will have a sacred place in the band, whether it is playing a good solid rhythm, singing the melody on cue and in key or playing the solos. There will ALWAYS be room for improvement.
Q: What if my skill level is above all my band members?
A: You are the one everyone is looking up to. The challenge for a great musician is to make good music in any given situation. You will have your golden place in the band and will be able to showcase your skills through the art of playing well with others.
Q: What if I miss a rehearsal?
A: A lot of work is put into band rehearsals and shaping the songs into a final product for performance. They are extremely important--DO NOT MISS THEM! However, if you must miss, try and coordinate an extra rehearsal (outside the NYCGS Rock Band Program) with your band mates at a time that works for everyone.
Q: What if I don't have a guitar/bass/drums?
A: It is important to get your own guitar or bass to practice and bring it to rehearsals and the performance. You can also rent one from NYCGS at a discounted rate. Drums will be provided.
Q: What if there's no singer in my band?
A: There are always great instrumental tunes that could be played. You can also step up and take the microphone if the singing is important to you.
Q: Where is the performance going to be?
A: The performance is going to be at Arlene's Grocery, one of the best venues in NYC--95 Stanton St. NYC, NY 10002-1405 (212) 358-1633.
